Evaluating Speeches

Speech evaluation in the classroom takes the form of a critique, a positive and constructive effort to help speakers improve. Criteria for speech evaluation include overall considerations, substance, structure, and presentation skills. Overall considerations encompass the speaker’s commitment, adaptation to the audience and occasion, clarity of purpose, freshness of perspective, and ethical standards. Substance involves the value of with topic, the sufficiency of research, the adequacy of supporting material, arid the speaker’s ability to reason. Structural criteria include the presence of art effective introduction, a clearly organized body that includes the main port and supporting materials, and a conclusion that provides closure. Presentation questions touch upon how well speakers use words and their ability to convey their messages through voice and gesture.
Listeners have ethical responsibilities. Ethical listeners do not prejudge 4 speeches, but are open to ideas and receptive to different perspectives. Ethical listeners test what they hear and are sensitive to the impact of ideas on hers. They represent all who might be affected by the message.
